I love the idea of recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, I don’t have many of those in my family. Most recipes that I’ve come to love have been found online from food bloggers such as The Pioneer Woman.
Fortunately, I do have one great recipe that was passed down from my great-grandmother, Myrtle McPheeters. It’s my family’s favorite dinner roll recipe and with Thanksgiving being only a month away, I thought this would be the perfect time to share it.
Wonder Roll Ingredients
Bowl #1
3/4 c shortening 1/2 c warm water
1 c boiling water 7 c flour
2 pkgs (or 4-1/2 tsp) yeast
Bowl #2
2 slightly beaten eggs 1 tsp salt
3/4 c sugar 1 c cold water
Wonder Roll Directions
Dissolve yeast in 1/2 c warm water.
In a large bowl (Bowl #1), combine shortening and boiling water. Stir until dissolved.
In another bowl (Bowl #2), combine eggs, sugar, salt, and cold water. Stir well.
Combine these two mixtures. Add yeast mixture.
Stir in flour and beat. (Dough will not be nearly as stiff as kneaded dough.)
Divide into equal parts in each bowl. Cover and place in refrigerator. Chill at least 3 hours. When dough is almost tripled in size, turn out on lightly floured board, work down.
Squeeze or cut rolls. Brush with melted butter.
Let rise until dough doubles in size. Then bake at 450* for 25 minutes.
Note: This dough will keep for a few days in the refrigerator.
